“Our scholarship recipients are wonderful affirmation of the good things taking place in the school system.”

The Douglas County Education Foundation hosted its annual scholarship recognition reception recently and handed out $51,210 in scholarships to members of the Class of 2019. The scholarship winners represent all five high schools and the College & Career Institute.

The reception enabled the scholarship winners and their benefactors to meet and get to know each other. It was a great opportunity for the students to say “thank you” in person, and for the donors to see tangible evidence of their gifts at work.

Ashley Eigel received the $1,500 Captain Herb Emory Memorial Scholarship. Ms. Eigel is a senior at Alexander High School who plans to major in journalism and is one of 50 students awarded a foundation-administered scholarship.

“I am absolutely honored to have received a scholarship from a local member of the community, let alone one that has made such a tremendous impact in our area,” says Ms. Eigel. “I will be forever grateful for Mrs. Emory, as she is helping me in my pathway to education, resulting in a lasting career for me.”

Ms. Eigel and her family and Karen Emory, sponsor of the Captain Herb Emory Memorial Scholarship, were able to meet at the reception.

“I was searching for ways to honor my late husband,” says Mrs. Emory when asked why she funds the annual Emory Scholarship. “Joining the Douglas County Education Foundation Board gave me the opportunity to realize there’s no better way to honor Herb than helping students interested in pursuing an education in the field that brought him so much pleasure.”

"The foundation is pleased to administer over $51,000 in locally-funded scholarships,” said Tonya Jackson, foundation board chair. “These are scholarships funded by people and businesses in Douglas County for the students of Douglas County. I congratulate each of the students who received a foundation scholarship. Our scholarship recipients are wonderful affirmation of the good things taking place in the school system.”
